Imagine a mini-world of India in America. Not a city like Chinatown, but a true mini-world. Sham Thakur did just that and created a world of puppets
depicting life in India. He has devoted almost a decade of work towards making these puppets, which replicate scenes such as that of a potter working on his wheel or a village council meeting in progress. Thakur recently held a solo exhibition in Delphi, named "Indian Images Through the Eyes of Puppets."
Now, he hopes to bring the puppets to the U.S. through an Indian American organization that will provide the space for such a museum. "If all these could be arranged under one roof, it would be a virtual museum on India depicting the humdrum life as against the dramatic or historical,"
Thakur told Indian Life & Style.
Thakur originally sought to make a film on the armed forces, using puppets instead of actual footages of the forces to avoid the hassle of security
clearances. He then expanded the idea to create a whole world of puppets of India. This talented historian currently has over 25 exhibits taking up an area
measuring 80' x 60'.
Some art and culture organizations in India are offering their support by bearing the cost of shipping (by freight) the puppets to the U.S. Now Thakur is in the market for an Indian American organization to take up the project so he can display his mini-world of India to Indians in America.
Thakur says that his museum idea could be both informative and entertaining. "Indians in America get nostalgic about India. They want to their children to
know what India is all about."
