Zabihah.com's founder Shahed Amanullah,
who was born in the U.S., has created
a Zagat-styled guide to restaurants
that will help Muslims around the globe find
halal restaurants to meet their Islamic dietary
code. Conforming to Islamic dietary codes
isn't always easy, but Zabihah.com guides
hungry patrons towards those who serve
the best halal food and steer them far from
those that don't.
The Web site morphed from Amanullah's
work on the 'American Muslims Intent on
Learning and Activism' site. It initially listed
only San Francisco Bay Area restaurants
but the response to expand the listings was
so overwhelming that there was no choice
but to comply. Zabihah.com was born and
today has over 1 million unique visitors each
month.
Although this comprehensive site was
launched in July of 1999, this year has been
a banner year as they have expanded to meet
the global needs of their customers at an aggressive
pace, and it now boasts nearly 6,000
restaurants and over 21,000 evaluations.
"I want this site to drive quality and patronage
for halal restaurants not just in the West,
but throughout the world," Amanullah tells
indianlifeandstyle.com. "We've expanded
service to mobile phones, iPhones, and
so on, and are going to incorporate GPS
capability soon. We want to touch people's
lives through their dining experiences, help
these businesses stay afloat and prosper, and
hopefully capture a little bit of that generated
economy for us."
Zabihah.com is an amazingly robust tool
but equally impressive is its founder. Just type
in Amanullah's name into any search engine,
and you will see he's no stranger to working
on solutions for various issues of concern to
the Muslim community. An activist, an entrepreneur
and a spokesperson, Amanullah can
be seen everywhere from PBS to CNN to being
interviewed by Ted Koppel on "Nightline."
